SUMMARY OF REPLIES FROM CUSTOMS AUTHORITIES [Handwritten] of mr Pritchard [end handwritten] IN RESPONSE TO AN INQUIRY AS TO HOW MANY MOHAMMEDAN PRIESTS IN RESPECTIVE STATES AND WHERE LOCATED, ALSO WHERE PERMANENT MOSQUES SITUATED.

[underlined] Tasmania: [end underlined] No Mohammedan priests or mosque there.

[underlined] Queensland: [end underlined] Permanent mosque and one priest at Mount Gravatt, near Brisbane, also one priest at Brisbane, who is about to proceed to Cloncurry, and who is said to have come from N.S.Wales.

[underlined] N.S.Wales: [ end underlined] Only one resident priest. There are also 2 missionary or visiting priests. No mosques.

[underlined] W.Australia: [end underlinde] Mosques at Perth (principal one), Coolgardie, Mt.Malcolm, Leonora, Bummers Creek, Mt.Sir Samuel, & Mt.Magnet. There are only 2 resident priests, both in Perth, and about 25 Sayeds (priests) who are called descendants of the Prophet. The latter are merely lay preachers, and are working men.

[underlined] S.Australia: [end underline] There are 3 mosques, viz, at Adelaide, Port Augusta, & Hergott Springs. One priest, whose address is not known. There are also 2 mosques at Broken Hill, and one priest.

[underlined] Victoria (through Mr.Pritchard): [end underline] There is no resident Mohammedan priest in Victoria who devotes all his time to religious work, but there are 3 Haffieses or Mullahs, who are hawkers. There are 2 "Shahs", decedents of the priest caste. They are also hawkers. No mosques in Victoria.
