Employment status of migrant pearlers – correspondence from Arthur Calwell to Kim Edward Beazley
A copy of a letter to Kim Beazley, regarding employment of migrants in the pearling industry.
I refer to your letter of the 22nd July, relative to one received by you from Mr. J. K. Ewers ordinarily of 13 Keane Street, Cottesloe, Western Australia, at present on an expedition through the North West and Kimberleys, concerning Messrs. Samsudin bin Katib and Pattiasina whose departure from Australia has been arranged.
Mr. Ewers is under a misapprehension regarding the failure of the two men to obtain re-employment in the pearling industry. Samsudin bin Katib was afforded every opportunity by me to secure employment with the pearler mentioned by Mr. Ewers who is not a member of the Pearl shellers Association. He failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Pattiasina, a former employee of this pearler was not re-engaged for the current season and as he was unable to secure employment in the industry with anyone else, his repatriation is being arranged by the pearler in accordance with the terms of the bond furnished to my Department for his departure from the Commonwealth when his services are no longer required.
These persons are not eligible to remain in Australia unless employed in the pearling industry and in view of their failure to secure re-engagement int eh industry it will be necessary for their former employers to arrange their repatriation at the first opportunity.
