Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that the National Archives' website and collection contain the names, images and voices of people who have died.

Some records include terms and views that are not appropriate today. They reflect the period in which they were created and are not the views of the National Archives.

To the Private Secretary of

-- His Most Gracious Majesty King George

Buckingham Palace.

Your Majesty

We,

the East Indian Community in Australia foster the highest feelings of respect to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales on his visit to India. The loyalty and attachment to Your Majesty's Throne has been strengthened by the recent visit of the Prince of Wales to Australia.

Indians in Australia have a high and noble affection for His Royal Highness. We hail the event of His Royal Highness' visit to India. We know that our Prince, will accrue [sic], from personal intercourse with our Princes and Chiefs, a knowledge of the great Empire over which – with the Will of Almighty God – he will reign some day. To-day [sic] His Royal Highness' tour of India has filled one of the most prominent places in the history of India. India has already recorded on her imperishable tablets the deeds of her heroes in thewar [sic]. We may dwell on our heroic deeds – deeds at Kut-el-Mara – unequalled in the records of the most heroic Nations – but we do not forget for one moment, our National humiliations to Your Majesty, and no self-blindness of our own, no specious reasoning will ever remove the East Indians of Australia from the true introduction of wise and beneficient [sic] laws of your Majesty's Empire.

We, the East Indians of Australia, through our Representative, Mr James Kavanagh, welcome your beloved son to India; but Your Majesty will find nowhere a more loyal and united community to your Majesty's Throne than the Indians of Australia.

May the King of all Nations – Almighty God – bless and preserve His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, long to

Citizenship

Issues of who is or can become an Australian citizen are closely tied to government policy. The White Australia policy stopped many non-Europeans becoming citizens in the 20th century.
