The Australian Government has provided $10 million in funding to the National Archives of Australia to digitise 850,000 World War II service records over the next four years.
Army and Air Force records from four series (B883, B884, A9300 and A9301) will be digitised and made freely available online through the National Archives' website. More than 200,000 World War II records are already available in digital form, including all Navy records.
Detailed planning and scheduling are underway, with digitisation by the National Archives and contracted providers due to start in early 2020.
Work will be done in stages, with batches of records from each series temporarily unavailable to the public while they are being digitised. Advice on records that are unavailable, that have been digitised and their release will be provided on the National Archives' website.
Digitisation on demand services will continue to be available for a fee.
This project will ensure Australians have easier access to records that help tell the stories of the service and sacrifice of those who came before us.
