Holden on to history: National Archives exhibition opens door to iconic car's journey

Friday, 12 June 2026

Take a tour through the history of Australia's automotive and cultural icon – General Motors Holden – at a free exhibition at National Archives of Australia in Canberra.

Rear vision: the Holden collection explores the evolution of the brand, bringing to life the memories and stories that established Holden as our beloved national icon.

The State Library of South Australia exhibition has travelled to Canberra and features items from their extensive Holden archives, including a selection of unique and fascinating artefacts, drawings, and images.

The exhibition traces Holden's early journey from a 19th-century saddlery, through to military production for the Second World War, the creation of 'Australia's own car', and the company's closure in 2017.

National Archives Director-General Simon Froude said the exhibition demonstrates how archives can tell the stories that define our nation.

‘Visitors to National Archives can explore the often-surprising reasons why historical documents continue to spark public imagination.

'Our aim is to foster a connection with the collection through immersive and engaging experiences. Originally developed by the State Library of South Australia in partnership with Adelaide University, Rear vision is complemented with archival records from the national collection including patents, advertising, industrial relations files and stories of women’s fight for equal pay,' he said.

The exhibition showcases rare objects and records such as the first and last engines Holden produced, a Monaro tri-matic gearbox, custom paint and trim samples, fibreglass and Lego model cars, and the original bronze lion statue from the Elizabeth plant entrance gate.

Discover these original materials, rare documents, and contributions from former employees that provide insights into the rise and fall of a much-loved Australian company.

Rear vision: the Holden collection is a free exhibition open every day at National Archives of Australia, Kings Avenue, Parkes ACT 2600 until 11 October. It is supported by daily gallery talks, events and programs, with an onsite café and store.
