National Archives Director-General Simon Froude welcomed Mr Beckett to the role.
'I am thrilled to welcome His Excellency as our Member Program Patron,' Mr Froude said.
'Mr Beckett's interest in human rights and native title law is close to National Archives' remit to connect Australians with evidence of government decision-making, so we look forward to his engagement with our organisation.
'National Archives members are passionate about the preservation of Australian history and ensuring it can be accessed by generations to come. Through their support and advocacy, our members help us to connect Australians with the collection and our nation's memory.
