National Archives Banned Book Club is for teachers of senior secondary English and Literature. Over the course of 4 sessions, this year-long program provides participants with 6 hours of TQI-approved professional learning.

As a National Archives Banned Book Club participant, you will get to –

  1. Contribute to a series of facilitated discussions about literary texts that were historically banned in Australia.
  2. View authentic archival records created by the Literature Censorship Board.
  3. Meet Patrick Mullins, author of The Trials of Portnoy: how Penguin brought down Australia's censorship system.
  4. Discuss contemporary censorship issues and share strategies for teaching banned books to students today.

Session dates:

  • Thursday 4 April 2024
  • Thursday 16 May 2024
  • Thursday 8 August 2024
  • Thursday 31 October 2024

This program will be capped at 10 participants.

Participants must commit to attend all 4 sessions, and to read 3 novels (selected by the group) over the course of the program.

The $20.00 admission fee covers all 4 sessions of this program.

The sessions will include light refreshments (tea, coffee, and biscuits).

This program has been approved by the Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) for 6 hours of professional learning.
