A page from Commander TA Detmers' encoded notebook

In January 1945, Commander TA Detmers, captain of the Kormoran, escaped from the Dhurringle detention camp in Victoria. Upon his recapture, he was found to be in possession of an encoded notebook. The notebook was confiscated and photographs were sent to Naval Intelligence for decryption. Once decoded, the notebook provided Detmer's own account of the battle with the Sydney. The original notebook was lost, but photographic copies were lent to the National Archives for copying in 2004.
