
The Australian Government wanted to showcase the Australian snowfields as comparable to the alps found in Western Europe. In the 1960s Australia was promoted as ‘[possessing] a greater area of skiable terrain than the whole of Switzerland … Winter creates at Kosciusko a fairyland of ranges thickly covered with drifted snow, virgin-white against an azure sky’.
