
For more than a century, Chinese Australians have served their country in the Australian armed forces. Their enlistment was not always welcomed, particularly during World War I when those enlisting were required to be 'substantially of European origin'. Henry Sam, from West Wyalong in New South Wales, was one of several sons of William and Jane Sam to serve during World War I.
