Australia, pageant of all nations

Inside Albert Hall, with Immigration Minister Harold Holt speaking at the national Citizenship Convention, January 1956

A pageant representing the countries from which Australia’s new citizens had come was a feature of the national citizenship convention in Albert Hall in January 1956. The citizenship conventions of the 1950s and 1960s were part of a government campaign to promote Australian citizenship.

This photograph shows Harold Holt officiating at his seventh citizenship convention, seven years after he became Immigration Minister when the Liberal Government of RG Menzies was elected in 1949.
