Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming off Cheviot Beach near Portsea in Victoria on 17 December 1967. His body was never recovered. While there have been many theories as to what happened, the official conclusion was that Holt's disappearance was purely accidental.
This picture, taken by a photographer from the Australian News and Information Bureau, shows mourners at Harold Holt's memorial service at St Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne on 22 December 1967. In the front row are Prince Charles and the Governor-General, Lord Casey, and his wife, Lady Casey. In the pew behind are the United States President Lyndon Johnson, President Park of South Korea, Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos of the Philippines, and British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
