Romantic, isolated and intimately linked with Australia's maritime heritage, lighthouses have a strong hold over the imagination of many Australians. Are you one of them?
The National Archives holds an impressive collection of records that reveal much about the role of lighthouses in Australia's past. In the lead-up to Federation, lighthouses and maritime issues were vital topics of discussion between the Australian colonies. In 1901 lighthouses and other issues of maritime navigation came under the control of the Australian Government.
Our collection includes lighthouse keepers' diaries, log books and exquisite architectural drawings of lighthouses from each state of Australia. You can search for more lighthouse photographs in our image bank, PhotoSearch, or see some of the lighthouse drawings and plans.
