
At about 4.40pm on 11 November 1975 from the steps of Parliament House, the Governor-General's official secretary, David Smith, read the proclamation that dissolved both houses of parliament and set an election for 13 December.
Gough Whitlam followed the announcement with his famous speech in which he called on supporters to 'maintain your rage'.
