Australia–China relations 1976: Looking forward

John Fitzgerald

RG Neale Lecture, 2007

Presented at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra
2 August 2007

Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser visited China in June 1976 on arguably the most colourful and controversial official visit ever undertaken between the two countries. Looking forward, Fraser’s strategic planning team, Alan Renouf’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Stephen FitzGerald’s Peking embassy offered compelling and sometimes competing visions of China’s future and of the appropriate foundations for building a durable relationship between the two countries to the present day. In his 2007 RG Neale Lecture, Professor John Fitzgerald tells their story from the archives of 1976.
