Images of South Australia's cycling history adorned Adelaide city streets in May 2014 as part of the Velo-fringe festival. Riding Past, a street exhibition jointly created by the National Archives of Australia, State Records of South Australia, State Library of South Australia and Adelaide City Archives.

The exhibition focused not just on the world of professional cycling but on telling the story of the introduction and rise in popularity of cycling as a recreational pursuit and its impact on everyday life from the 1870s to the present day.

The State Records collection holds several records relating to South Australia's centenary celebrations in 1936 including a poster from a cycling derby, an event which attracted international riders and culminated in a grand final at Wayville Oval on Christmas day. Series held at the National Archives relating to the registration of patents and trademarks contain many records from the 1890s and 1900s for improvements to bicycle design. The history of cycling related businesses such as Bullocks Cycle Stores is represented in the exhibition through a photograph from 1912 of the Pirie Street shop and a 1924 quote for a push bike provided to the Adelaide City Corporation. The Adelaide City Archives contain several advertisements from 1924 for bicycles sold by Harris Scarfe such as the Royal Unicorn, a 'Gents Light Roadster' and the State Library has many photographs from the 19th century including one from 1870 of a velocipede where the wheels are made of wood . Other images in the exhibition include photographs of the SA Police Corps on their Bullock bicycles from 1904, a WW1 soldier who served with the Cycling Corps and champion cyclist W Tregonning on his penny farthing from 1881.

The public can view the exhibition and contribute their own images online at www.flickr.com/groups/ridingpast or by using #ridingpast for Twitter and Instagram.
