By the end of the war, many Australians had found love amidst grief and devastation. The mass movement of people across the world caused even the most unlikely of paths to cross. The Australian Government encouraged couples to embark on a new life together. Domestic contentment was considered beneficial to morale, and new families would comfortably repopulate the nation. With hundreds marrying every week, the extra berths required created a logistical challenge for the Department of Repatriation. Many wives, fiancées and children received subsidised transport on special 'family ships'. Needless to say, while many relationships flourished on Australian soil, others faltered.
