As the end of the war approached, some Australians used their literary skills to draw attention to themes of national concern. Others drew on reserves of dramatic or musical creativity to give shape to their trauma, grieve for lost friends, or embark on an uncertain journey of rehabilitation.

Taking the opportunity to register these unique works with the Commonwealth Copyright Office confirmed intellectual ownership and safeguarded any future royalties. Some ventures proved commercially successful, others less so. Nonetheless, each author was confident that their wartime creative expression was an important record of a nation transformed by the conflict.
