Online access to records on request
Our national digitisation service provides online access to the Archives’ collection across Australia.
How it works
You can purchase an online copy of a record to view through RecordSearch. The easiest way to purchase an online copy is to select the 'Request copy' button on the item page in RecordSearch, and pay the required fee (we have a secure online payment facility).
If you order an online copy:
- an image of each page of the record is made available for public viewing in our online collection database, RecordSearch, and
- we will notify you by email (if you have provided an email address) when the online copy is available for viewing.
How long it will take
Requests for online copies of records which have already been cleared for public access (ie Open or Open with exception) will be available within 30 days.
Fees for digital copies
Fees for digital copies are set according to the average size of files in the series.
| File size (pages) | Within Australia (incl. GST) | Overseas (GST-free) |
|---|---|---|
<100 | $16.50 | $15 |
>100 | $38.50 | $35 |
Fees for photocopies are listed in Fact Sheet 51 – Copying charges.
Records subject to the service
The service applies to paper files smaller than A3 size that are available for public access and listed on RecordSearch. They may be in any state or territory.
Records larger than A3, boxes of cards, photographs, microfiche, audiovisual records and records in some other formats are not included in this service. Please contact the Archives reference service to discuss options to access this material.
Image quality
Images are optimised for on-screen viewing. Most items will be presented in two sizes; a smaller viewing image and a larger image suitable for printing to read on paper.
You can also order a high-resolution digital copy – see the Imaging Services order form for products and prices.
