HMAS Tobruk

The Battle class destroyer HMAS Tobruk was constructed for the Royal Australian Navy at Cockatoo Island Dockyard as ship number 185. The last all-riveted warship built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, it was based on a British Admiralty design and modified by the Navy Office. Ordered in October 1944 and laid down on 5 August 1946, it was launched on 20 December 1947 and completed on 17 May 1950. Its overall length was 379 feet, and displacement was 2 400 tons. HMAS Tobruk served in Korea on several occasions, and at the British atomic tests at the Monte Bello Islands. Later it was used as a naval training ship, and in 1972 sold to a Japanese company for scrap.
