Other individual ships

Series in this section relate to individual vessels which were not built at the dockyard, or allocated a ship number by the dockyard, but whose records were included in the collection. Some of the vessels were refitted or repaired at the dockyard, and records of others were probably held for reference purposes. In most cases only one or a small number of series is held. The series are listed in chronological order.

This series consists of a folder containing a collection of certificates from Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, and related correspondence, for SS Euwarra and lighthouse steamer Cape Leeuwin, as well as a folder of several certificates for the Cape Leeuwin.

 
ESTIMATE TENDER BACKGROUND PAPERS FOR 10 000 TON CRUISER, 1923–24C3389

This series consists of tables, calculation papers, reports, prints and drawings used for background information to prepare the tender for a 10 000 ton cruiser. Records relating to HMAS Adelaide and Brisbane, and to HMS Effingham and Glorious are included. Also included is information concerning detailed estimates for the tender.

Because of the cost of building such a vessel in Australia, it was decided not to proceed with the project. Two cruisers were later ordered from Britain, and became HMAS Australia and Canberra.

WORKING DRAWINGS OF HMAS CANBERRA, 1929–49C3304

This series consists of the working drawings of HMAS Canberra, some of which are the same drawings as those used to modernise HMAS Australia. They depict the general arrangement and layout of the machinery and fittings of the ship. A modernisation had been planned but Canberra was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island in August 1942.

The three drawings in this series are of the general arrangement, lines plan and structural sections of a forty foot steel launch. It is not clear whether the vessel was built, or whether these were preliminary drawings for the steel workboat Bustler which was built during 1978 and 1979.

This pack consists of a manilla folder containing survey report forms and the Company’s work order for the Intermediate Docking of HMAS Derwent at Cockatoo Island Dockyard between 6 November and 20 December 1978 (job number 2526). The pack was considered to represent a typical list of work items undertaken on a frigate.

PACK OF INFORMATION RELATING TO THE RESTORATION OF THE JAPANESE MIDGET SUBMARINE (JOB NUMBER 6785), 1985–87M3139

The restoration of a Japanese midget submarine from World War II was undertaken on behalf of the Australian War Memorial, where the submarine was on display, during 1985 and 1986. Most of the work was done by apprentices. Contained in this series is correspondence, work reports and orders, and drawings.
