HMAS Vampire

The Daring class destroyer HMAS Vampire, designed by the British Admiralty, was constructed at Cockatoo Island Dockyard as ship number 189. It was laid down on 1 July 1952, launched on 27 October 1956, and completed on 22 June 1959. Its length was 390 feet overall and displacement was 2 800 tons. The original British design was extensively modified in Australia.

HMAS Vampire served in the East and on routine fleet duties in Australian waters. The vessel, now owned by the Australian National Maritime Museum, is moored in Darling Harbour beside the museum.
