Classification by function

The term function describes each distinct type of business performed by an organisation. Activities are the major tasks performed by the organisation to accomplish each of its functions.

Classification of information and records according to function and activity, rather than organisational structures, provides a stable framework for classification. The structure of your organisation may change many times, but the functions an organisation carries out usually remain the same.

Classification by function is based on why a record is being created and used, rather than its content. It is important to know the extent of a function, to ensure that business responsibilities are met.

Any record created in the process of carrying out agency business can be described with one FUNCTION – ACTIVITY within a Business Classification Scheme.
