28 July 1914 - World War I begins when Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

1918 - Serves with 77th Artillery Regiment in Belgium

9 November 1918 - Revolution in Berlin, proclamation of a republic by Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann in Berlin, and abdication of Emperor William II

11 November 1918 - Armistice signalling the end of World War I

28 June 1919 - German representatives sign Treaty of Versailles

1923 - Hyperinflation in Germany

1923 - Graduates as a Doctor of Science

1923 - Starts work as a chemist with the Schering-Kahlbaum company in Berlin

9 November 1923 - Failed Hitler putsch in Munich

1928 - Begins to study chemistry at the University of Leipzig

24 October 1929 - Collapse of the stock market in New York, and beginning of worldwide recession
