Intelligence report submitted by the captain of the MV Hermion three weeks after the recovery of the Carley float at Christmas Island

Shipping intelligence report submitted by the captain of the MV Hermion three weeks after the recovery of the Carley float and body at Christmas Island. Although an autopsy was performed on the body, no report has ever been found. The 1999 inquiry by the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade judged that the remains most likely belonged to one of Sydney's crew.

In 2006 a Navy-led expedition to Christmas Island discovered the remains of the 'unknown sailor'. These have been subjected to detailed forensic and DNA analysis, however, his identity has not been determined.
