HMAS Hobart bell

The inscription on this commemorative bell reads: ‘Presented by the Captain, Officers and Ship’s Company to Mrs SM Bruce on the occasion of naming the Ship at Devonport [England],14th October 1938’. Ethel Bruce renamed the British light cruiser HMS Apollo as HMAS Hobart when the ship was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy. At the time, Ethel’s husband was Australian High Commissioner in London.
