Australian prisoners of war of the Japanese in World War II

HOPE, James Wallace (A14171, 102)

In 2012, the Japanese government presented several lists of records to the National Archives of Australia. These records relate to Australians who had been captured by the Japanese during WWII. It is understood that these records were created and used by Japanese authorities for the management of prisoners of war.

The collection contains information about 4,500 of the approximately 22,000 Australian service personnel and civilians who were taken prisoner of war by the Japanese. This collection does not contain information about every Australian who was a prisoner of war of the Japanese in World War II. The location of records about other Australians who were prisoners of war is not known.
