A research grant for archivists

2008 Ian Maclean Award

The visible archive

Mitchell Whitelaw from the University of Canberra is the 2008 Ian Maclean Award winner. His project – 'The visible archive' – will create interactive maps of the National Archives collection.

The National Archives of Australia has an important national role: to encourage excellence in the archival profession.

We offer Ian Maclean Awards to individuals interested in conducting research that will benefit the archival and historical profession in Australia and promote the important contribution that archives make to society. Ian Maclean Awards commemorate the life and work of Ian Maclean.

More than one award may be granted annually and the award is open to overseas applicants. The principal benefit of an award for the recipient is the opportunity to complete an innovative research project that may require travel or time away from their regular employment. Successful applicants are expected to actively promote the results of their research.

The current award-holder is Mitchell Whitelaw, an academic, writer and artist who teaches in the Faculty of Design and Creative Practice at the University of Canberra. Former award-holders include Gavan McCarthy, Bruce Smith, Nikki Henningham, Eileen Chanin and Steven Miller.
