The registration of births, deaths and marriages in Australia was initially the responsibility of the colonies and later, the states and territories. Inquiries about births, deaths and marriages within Australia should, in most cases, be directed to registrar in the state or territory in which the event took place. The table that follows indicates where registers for the Australian states and territories are held.

Deaths on war service are generally not registered by the state authorities, but by the relevant service. To obtain copies of death certificates, write to:

Australian citizens overseas

Registrations for Australian citizens lodged overseas at Australian Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates-General, Consulates or other Australian or United Kingdom missions are controlled by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. These include the registration of children born overseas to Australian citizens. Access to these registers is governed by the Archives Act 1983, which provides a right of access to records that are more than 30 years old. Requests for access to registrations lodged over 30 years ago, should be directed to the Archives' National Reference Service (contact details on Fact Sheet 1 – Addresses and hours of opening).

The registers listed below have been transferred to the Archives custody.

Australian citizens or residents born overseas

Records of births and marriages which took place before a person migrated to Australia are not maintained by the Australian government. Where the person has been naturalised such details will usually be found on the application for naturalisation. For further information see Fact Sheet 68 – Naturalisation records held in Canberra.

For information on persons of other than Australian nationality you will need to contact the registrar in the appropriate overseas country or their representative in Australia.
