Mr David Irvine AO was appointed a member of the Advisory Council in November 2015. He was previously the Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO). From 2003-2009 Mr Irvine was Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) and held senior diplomatic posts in Papua New Guinea and China.
As a history graduate and a career foreign service officer, I am fascinated by Australia's march to and through nationhood.
I am particularly keen that Australians should have direct access to their history, including our increasingly confident engagement with the many different nations of our neighbourhood, through such institutions as the National Archives.
