National Archives fire simulation

Media release: Tuesday, 7 August 2012

With a continued commitment to protecting the heritage items in its custody, the National Archives of Australia has arranged a fire simulation with the ACT Emergency Services.

Various types of storage boxes, furniture and shelving, as well as storage containers for audio-visual material, cassettes and computer tapes will be set alight to ascertain the levels of protection they would offer in a fire.

The unwanted items have been donated by various cultural institutions or purchased from second hand stores.

Venue: ACT Emergency Services Training Centre at Hume. It is at the end of David Warren Road, near the Alexander Maconochie Centre and the Southcare helicopter base. Look for the tower at the training facility.

FOR INTERVIEW: Ian Batterham, senior conservator with the National Archives of Australia will be available for interview on site.
