The Australian Road Safety Council was established by the Australian Government in 1947 to conduct nation-wide educational campaigns to improve road safety. The council created advertising posters and composed songs and jingles. It was highly successful: from 1970 to 1999 the fatality rate on Australia’s roads dropped from 30.4 to 9.3 deaths per 100,000 population.
